Markey: Bush’s Global Warming “Plan” Will Cook the Earth

WASHINGTON (April 16, 2008) – Today Chairman Edward J. Markey (D-Mass.) of the Select Committee on Energy Independence and Global Warming reacted to President Bush’s speech on global warming. He also called on the EPA to release climate documents that have been subpoenaed by the committee, with a deadline of today.

Below is the statement of Chairman Markey:

“By the time President Bush’s plan finally starts to cut global warming emissions, the planet will already be cooked.

“The President’s short-term goal is to do nothing, his medium-term goal is to do nothing much, and his long-term goal is to do nothing close to what’s needed to save the planet from global warming.

“On a day of faith in America, where the Pope and scientists all agree that we must act on global warming, President Bush’s paltry goals show little faith in American ingenuity and solutions to global warming.

“He claims we must cooperate with other countries on climate-friendly technology, but his administration didn’t even send a participant to a major 60-country renewable energy meeting in Berlin last week. How can the American people have faith in this President’s climate goals when he doesn’t even show faith in his own rhetoric?

"According to the head of the Nobel-winning IPCC, global emissions need to peak by 2015, and reduce after that. Waiting until 2025 just to stop the increases in U.S. emissions spells disaster for the planet.

“While President Bush speaks about cutting emissions, his administration has put a political freeze on numerous climate decisions within his own EPA.

“Today’s speech highlights the need for the release of these global warming documents from the Bush administration and the need to understand fully what is going on inside the walls of the White House.

“Today marks EPA’s deadline to turn over documents, but the deadline for President Bush taking real action on global warming has long since passed.

“If the EPA does not respond in a satisfactory manner today, I will consult with the members of the Select Committee and House leadership about next steps in this process.”
